Test Driving Course

Theory Test...

The theory test is a two a part test that consists of 50 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test. You would need to meet or exceed both the sections pass marks to pass your theory test as a whole. COST £23
The multiple choice section:
– This section consists of 50 questions, each questions worth 1 mark. To pass your multiple choice section you need a mark of 43 or above. If you do not achieve this then you have failed your test.

-The second part of the test consists of a series of 14 video clips. In each video there will be a developing hazard where you will have have to click the mouse when you recognise the developing hazard. The earlier you spot the developing hazard (by clicking your mouse) the higher you score, but, remember to not click too many times as there is click limit. Clicking in a pattern will also go against you as it will result in a fail.

-Every video clip is scored out of a maximum of 5 and at least one video will have at least 2 developing hazards.

– Hazard perception is scored out of 75 and the pass mark 44, if you do not achieve the benchmark of 44 in this you will fail.

-overall to pass your theory, you need 43 in MCQ and 44 in hazard perception

-WE RECOMMEND THE APP THEORY 4IN1 TO PRACTICE YOUR THEORY TEST

Practical Test...

The practical test is a 40 minute test that is made up of an eyesight test, show me tell me questions and then the driving routes.

COST- WEEKDAYS- £62 WEEKENDS & EVENINGS- £75

The eyesight test:
This is done at the start of the test, it requires you to read a number plate from a certain distance. This is essential to pass otherwise the test will not continue, so if you wear glasses or contact lenses please make to wear these on not only the test but also for your everyday driving and also lessons.

-These are basic questions to show and check vehicle safety questions

-the examiner will ask one ‘show me’ question (where you show the examiner how you would carry out the check)

-you will also be asked one ‘tell me’ question (where the examiner asks you a vehicle safety question and you tell them how you carry out the task)

READ THE SHOW ME TELL ME QUESTIONS HERE

-The test consists of the examiner giving you directions for 20 minutes and then 20 minutes of independent driving.

-you will be asked to carry out 1 reversing manoeuvre

-one emergency stop

-4/5 pull up on the left and park

throughout the test your are allowed to make up 15 minor mistakes but anything over 15 minor mistakes or any major or dangerous mistake will result in a fail. So do not worry if you make a little mistake, even experienced drivers make occasional mistakes. The examiner is wanting to asses your overall standard of driving. If an examiner deems you to be unsafe or dangerous, they will terminate your test there and then.

MANOEUVRES that the examiner could choose from:

-forward bay park- drive into a bay and then safely reverse out

-reverse bay pack- reverse into a bay and then drive out

-parallel park- reverse park at the side of the road parallel to other vehicles

-pull up on the right and reverse 2 car lengths- as it says but then rejoin traffic safely

-20 mins of independent driving where you either follow sat nav directions or traffic signs. -its totally okay if you go the wrong way, it happens to full licence holders too. Your main focus is to drive safely
Show me tell me questions (click above to see the full set of questions) These will be asked before the initial driving is carried out and after the eyesight test has been conducted. You will be asked 1 of each type of question, so 1 show me, 1 tell me. -Show me is where the examiner will ask you a question and you show them how you would carry out the task -Tell me where an examiner will you a question and you tell them how you would carry out the task

There are 7 show me questions and you could be asked any 1 out of the 7. Below are the show me questions, to view how to carry them out CHECK OUT THE DEMONSTRATION ON OUR TIKTOK:

  1. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?

  2. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen?

  3. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?

  4. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?

  5. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d operate the horn?

  6. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?

  7. When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

You could be asked any 1 question out of the 14 questions below:

1. Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

2. Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.

3. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.

4. Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire outer circumference of the tyre.

5. Tell me how you’d check that the headlights and tail lights are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

6. Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

7. Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Explain you’d operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle (as this is a ‘tell me’ question, you don’t need to physically check the lights).

8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on this car.

Explain you’d operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help.

9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made.

Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use it/them. You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.

Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify dipstick/oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

Identify high and low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level.

14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings.
